Speech-Language
The expert pediatric speech-language therapists at the Children's Center for Therapy help children who experience problems producing the sounds of speech and understanding and using language. The speech-language therapists work with children to develop oral motor skills for speech and swallowing, comprehension of language, combining words and grammar, fluency, reading, social skills, and play skills.

Occupational Therapy
Meaningful activities (occupations) such as learning, play, leisure, social participation, self-care, and transition/work skills promote physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and developmental health. At the Children's Center for Therapy, our expert pediatric occupational therapists identify and meet the needs of children who experience delays or challenges in development through remediation, modifications, adaptations, and collaboration with other professionals.

Physical Therapy
Pediatric physical therapists at the Children's Center for Therapy treat physical impairments and functional limitations that directly affect the daily lives of children with special health care needs. They address deficits in balance, motor coordination, strength, range of motion, gait, motor planning, proprioceptive body awareness, age-appropriate ball skills, and riding a tricycle or bike.

Feeding Therapy
Help your child improve swallowing and feeding skills through the multidisciplinary approach used by therapists at the Children's Center for Therapy. Our evaluation team including a speech therapist and an occupational therapis understands how to correctly assess your child's needs.Treatment addresses all aspects of feeding and swallowing. Our therapists apply their training in multiple, evidence-based approaches, such as the Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) approach to feeding and TalkTools® oral placement therapy, so your child learns to involve sensory, oral motor, and social skills needed for feeding and swallowing development.Your child may receive therapeutic services as an individual or as part of a group. We also work very closely with families to encourage daily practice and learning at home.

Hippotherapy
Using the movements of a horse as a therapeutic treatment tool is known as hippotherapy. The term comes from the Greek word "hippos" which means "horse" In hippotherapy, licensed physical, occupational, or speech therapists use the horse's multi-dimensional movements to provide a dynamic base of support for treatment.

The Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Clinic provides services to children who are in need of developing and expanding their speech and/or language skills. These difficulties may occur alone or may be seen in conjunction with diagnoses such as Global Developmental Delay, Specific Language Impairment and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Evaluation and therapy are available for children with:
Language and/or speech delays
Language-related learning problems
Articulation and phonological disorders

Evaluation services include an interview, assessment, feedback and written report in order to determine and/or confirm a diagnosis, develop a treatment plan, and monitor progress over time.

Therapy sessions are tailored to the specific needs of each child. Clinicians use a variety of techniques and strategies to facilitate progress:
Individual therapy sessions give each child the personal attention he or she needs.
Group therapy sessions provide a realistic communication context in which children can practice newly developed skills.

This approach provides a supportive social environment with appropriate peers to assist in generalization of emerging skills. In addition to these traditional approaches, the program incorporates a variety of treatment methods, including devices to support communication from simple visual symbol systems to computer assisted learning. Clinical faculty and graduate students work closely with family members, teachers, support personnel to design a program that best facilitates the child's communication development.

The Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Clinic provides evaluations for adults who are experiencing problems in communication which may be effecting school, social experiences, and / or employment. Clinical faculty who specialize in specific areas of communication including voice, fluency, aural rehabilitation and neurogenics are available as well for evaluation and ongoing treatment. (See navigation bar at left). In addition to specialty areas mentioned, adults seeking evaluation in this clinic may have difficulties in communication related to:
Autism Spectrum Disorders
Developmental delay/cognitive delays
Learning disabilities with language delays

An evaluation includes a complete history and interview; formal and informal testing; and a conference summarizing the results of the evaluation as well as specific recommendations. A written report follows to the client detailing all aspects of the evaluation. If additional referrals are needed or direct services are deemed appropriate and desired by the client, those arrangements are facilitated by the clinical faculty.
