Arrowhead offers two residential programs: Traditional and Intensive. Both programs operate under the same programmatic philosophy and are geared toward integrating youth back into their communities. We work to create a therapeutic environment by involving the family as part of the program, and we can provide therapeutic interventions that are empowering and tailored to the needs of each individual and family.

Youth placed in Arrowhead's residential program have experienced moderate to severe difficulties in the home, school, or community. They have displayed behaviors that are symptoms of mental health issues which have not been effectively reduced or resolved in a less restrictive environment. They have no serious organic, physical, or emotional handicaps and possess a normal intelligence.

Traditional Program - The traditional program accepts male or female youth between the ages of 12-21 with moderate presenting mental health symptoms. Youth Assessment and Screening Instrument (YASI) generally list risk factors in the moderate range. GAF/GAS scores are generally 50-41 at entrance. Funding for our traditional program comes from the per-diem cost of placement utilized by statewide county probation offices, the Illinois State Board of Education, the Department of Juvenile Justice, and private placements.

Intensive Program - The intensive program accepts male youth between the ages of 12-21 with moderate to severe presenting mental health symptoms. Youth eligible for the DCFS contracted beds are between the ages of 14-18. GAF/GAS scores are generally 40-31 at entrance. Funding for our Intensive program comes from the per-diem cost of placement utilized by Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS 9-bed contract). Three additional placement beds remain an option for utilization by DCFS (above contract bed).

For children with mental health concerns, you'll find individual behavioral therapy services at the Children's Center for Therapy. With the help of a licensed mental health professional, your child can develop stronger social skills and greater emotional capacity through play, talk, and reflective interactions.

Children's Center Charities offers both individual therapy for children ages three and above, as well as Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for children ages two to eight.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
This evidence-based intervention is effective for children ages 2-8 exhibiting behavioral problems such as aggression, tantrums, defiance, and non-compliance. PCIT is a directive form of play therapy that works with parents and children together in weekly sessions, focusing on building positive parent-child relationships, and teaching parents effective methods for managing their children's misbehavior.

Individual Therapy
In this theoretically-based, therapeutic play approach, children meet one-on-one with a licensed social worker or counselor for weekly sessions. Using play (the normal communicative and learning process of children), the clinician works with each child to help them cope with difficult emotions, which often lead to negative behaviors. The clinician also teaches children positive coping strategies and helps them to identify more constructive solutions. Individual behavioral health therapy is available for children ages 3 and above. Individual therapy for adolescents is also offered, utilizing a talk-based therapy approach to help young adults in exploring and improving their emotional, behavioral, and relationship functioning.
