What Can You Do?

Take your child to a healthcare provider for regular check-ups. Well-child exams are the one place where nearly all families have contact with a health care provider. If you have concerns about how your child plays, learns, acts, or how they are growing, talk to your child's healthcare provider about these concerns, and ask about a developmental screening.” (Iowa HHS, 2024)

Balance Autism provides innovative services for children and adults with Autism throughout the state of Iowa. Our Children's Clinic in Davenport provides intensive one-on-one therapy utilizing the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA). Each child has an individualized treatment plan developed by a board certified behavior analyst. The treatment plan addresses communication, behavior management, social interactions, and engagement. In addition to child's therapy, parents receive at least an hour of direct training each week. This teaches parents the same strategies Balance Autism uses with their child and how they can use them at home and in the community.

The Bright Beginnings Program may be available to all Cedar County residents who are pregnant/delivering babies. Bright Beginnings is a structured program that has been awarded the Iowa Family Support Credential for Family Support Home Visitation Programs. We offer prenatal and postnatal services to parents to identify the presence of risk factors that may inhibit positive parenting and healthy practices; offer parenting education and support commensurate with a family's level of need; make regular home visits; and collaborate with other family support organizations to provide a comprehensive continuum of services to families that we serve.

Bright Beginnings works with families to improve parent education and nurturing skills, as well as develop goals, provide support to achieve those goals, and increase self-reliance within the population we serve. We are able to provide incentives to our families that are actively achieving their established goals; these incentives include a wide array of items such as: diapers, car seats, clothes, household necessities, and other items identified by the families.

Bright Beginnings is able to serve families that are prenatal and have children up through age 5. Potential referrals will be visited by a Family Support Worker to determine eligibility for services, as well as determine what other services the family could be linked with to provide support and assistance.

FaDSS is a supportive service to assist Family Investment Program (FIP) families with significant or multiple barriers reach self-sufficiency.

Referral to FaDSS is made through the Department of Human Services, PROMISE JOBS Program, other third-party sources, and self-referrals. Participation in FaDSS is a voluntary option for people receiving Family Investment Program (FIP) benefits. FaDSS provides services that promote, empower, and nurture families towards economic and emotional self-sufficiency.

The foundation of FaDSS is regular home visits with families, using a strength-based approach. Core services include support, goal setting, and assessment. Support is given in many ways such as referrals, group activities, linking families to communities and advocacy. Assessment aids the family to identify strengths that they possess that may be used to eliminate barriers to self-sufficiency. Goal setting helps families break down goals that seem out of reach into small steps that will lead to success.

At Trinity Muscatine Public Health, our goal is to connect with all new and expecting mothers who reside in Muscatine County to provide them with information about resources available and to connect them to the supports they may need.

• Muscatine Community School District’s Parents as Teachers Program helps you understand child development and connect you to the resources you need to make the best choices for your family. Parents as Teachers offers personal visits customized for the needs of your family.
• Lutheran Services in Iowa’s HOPES and Parents as Teachers Programs are a free and voluntary in-home visitation programs for parents who would like to learn more about creating a healthy future for their young child and empower you to be your child’s first teacher! Family Support Specialists and Parent Educators offer parenting tips and support, child development information, and more in order to help parents achieve their goals for their family. • Child Care Resource and Referral can help you find quality childcare for your family by providing referrals to childcare programs that meet your needs, information on quality child care and child development, help with making informed child care choices, and child care financial assistance information.
• The Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency’s Early Access Program is Iowa’s system of early intervention services that supports families with young children birth to age three, who may have concerns about their child’s growth and development. Early Access services are provided at no cost to young children that qualify and their families. These services might include education consultation, occupational therapy, and more.
• Family Development and Self Sufficiency (FaDSS) is a completely voluntary program that can be tailored to families’ individual needs. FaDSS is a home visitation program that assists families to become self-sufficient through a strength-based approach. Families must be receiving cash assistance (FIP) through the State of Iowa and actively participating in Promise Jobs.
• Family Program Services of the Muscatine YMCA provides parenting education, self-sufficiency trainings, respite, grandparent support, Dad’s group following the “24/7 Dads” curriculum, and family focused activities. Trying to stretch your food dollars?  Use WIC food in more interesting ways?  Feed picky eaters in your home?  Cook more?  All of those things are part of the free Buy. Eat. • Early Head Start/Head Start programs provide free quality early childhood education to children ages prenatal through five years of age. • The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) serves Iowa residents who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or post-partum; infants, and children up to five years of age. They provide nutritional counseling, breastfeeding support, referrals to other programs and a variety of healthy, nutritious foods for your family.
• Trinity Muscatine Public Health provides many services for families in their child rearing years with young children: Immunizations for those who qualify, assistance with applications for Medicaid (state insurance) and Hawk-i (free or low-cost healthcare for kids and teens), reproductive health and family planning services, support services for pregnant and/or parenting teens, developmental screenings for children 5 years and younger and a physician-referred 1st Five program that links families with children 5 years old and younger to community services. ECIMC provides financial support to families in Muscatine County through Preschool, Daycare & Transportation Scholarships. Families can apply for our Early Learning Scholarships on an annual basis. ECIMC also assists in funding numerous programs throughout the county to better serve our children ages 0-5.

It is a social networking site for families of children with disabilities to make connections and share resources and support. Membership is free and features include forums, live chats, groups, videos and blogs.

Family Program Services (FPS) provides programming to families through group support. Several groups are held each week including those for teen parents, Spanish speaking mothers, parents with children 0-grade school, parents with children in middle and high school, and grandparents raising grandchildren. Programming includes parenting education, self-sufficiency, respite, family focus, and grandparents raising grandchildren support. FPS also provides family strengthening educational workshops, family bonding activities, job seeking skills, child sexual abuse prevention, and cost saving techniques, etc. All programs are free and open to the public whether or not they are YMCA members. Community referrals for families are an integral part of programming. Childcare and transportation are provided for all services.

Family to Family is a free program that provides families with special needs children with a Family Navigator to assist the family in finding services for the special needs child as well as other family members. They also provide trainings to develop self-advocacy.

This group is facilitated by the Muscatine Community YMCA. It meets twice monthly for grandparents who are raising or helping to raise their grandchildren and for other supporting family members. This group provides support, discusses challenging legal/medical/family situations, and directs family members to community resources. Brief Intensive Services offers 6 months of in home services to youth and their families. The goals of the program include increasing formal and informal supports for families, improving family functioning, improving school performance, and decreasing involvement with DHS and/or the juvenile justice system. With in the first month of services families are provided a family team meeting to identify and plan their service needs.
