Facing an unplanned pregnancy can be frightening. There are so many new feelings and so many decisions to consider. But no one has to face this situation alone. The caring pregnancy planning counselors at The Center for Youth and Family Solutions are available to assist expectant parents facing an unexpected pregnancy as they sort through their thoughts and feelings and consider their options. By providing a safe, non-judgmental and supportive environment, our counselors can help provide information, education and resources so that expectant parents can make an informed decision. Our counselors are also here to help with next steps once a plan is in place.

The Mississippi Valley Family Resiliency Program team is one of three teams in the state of Iowa working collaboratively to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment services for families and child(ren) who have been prenatally or environmentally exposed to alcohol, tobacco and/or illicit drugs.
Project Goals

Deliver collaborative services for families and children affected by parental substance use.

Increase professional knowledge about the impact of substance exposure to enhance the effectiveness of treatment and services.

Conduct comprehensive assessments of developmental, neurological, behavioral, and psychological functioning of children.

Develop treatment plans that will enhance enrollment of substance exposed children and their families in necessary services.

Improve health outcomes for children and families affected by parental substance use.

Increase permanency and stability for children who are or are at risk of being place in out of home care.
What to Expect

Caregivers will receive an intake packet, which includes various caregiver and child screenings, assessments, and consent forms.

Children will participate in a comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation with our partnering provider.

The transdisciplinary team will review the results and develop a comprehensive treatment plan with recommendations for appropriate services and care.

Families may receive ongoing follow-up services with the program's Family Navigator.

Caregivers will receive referrals to services (substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, community services,) as needed.

Family Planning provides confidential, low-cost, preventative health care to both females and males to help with their sexual health and reproductive health needs.
Services include pap smears, breast and pelvic exams, providing and dispensing of various birth control, pregnancy testing, screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (Chlamydia and Gonorrhea), and providing emergency contraception.

Maternal Health Services can help pregnant women in Cedar, Louisa and Muscatine counties. We seek to encourage healthy behavior for mothers in order to deliver healthy babies. Our registered nurse follows the mother's health care throughout her pregnancy. She also can visit after the baby is delivered.
The social worker or nurse can also provide:
Help with finding a doctor or dentist for medical/dental care
Help in obtaining health coverage
Referral to community resources and services
Health education and support on a variety of topics
Prenatal education and support
Nutrition education and support
Home visits by a registered nurse and/or social worker
Breast Feeding Classes are offered free of charge by our Certified Breast Feeding Educator. Classes are free and open to the public.
